Yoga & Aerial Teacher and Office Assistant
How did you first come to yoga, & what was that experience like?
I have been lucky to have many great teachers. I grew up with a meditation & martial arts background before the amputation of my right leg following a motorcycle accident at the age of 12.
After a decade of struggling with the resulting back and hip pain, I started searching for yoga studios near me, craving something beyond the mainly physical practices I had tried in the past. I wanted to heal my mind as well.
I found Return Yoga's website, and deep dived into reading about yoga philosophy in Karin's blog. It felt like a calling home. In classes, I began to deliberately explored my breath for the first time. Karin is still my mentor and main teacher, passing on the teachings of T.K.V. Desikachar and Sri T. Krishnamacharya. Through my personal practices and study I have found some tools to more ethically approach reality & my personal experience of it; including living a more Earth & resource conscious lifestyle. It has changed everything, and nothing at the same time.
What is your favorite experience of Yoga?
The sense of dedication and reverence I have cultured for my daily practices over a long span of time. They hold me gently when I'm falling apart. I just have to keep showing up.
A piece of Yogic Philosophy that's special to you?
The goal of using meditation and yoga is not stillness or emptiness of mind. It is to train the attention towards clarity, and a sense of flowing with the universe rather than against it. I found this approach helpful when returning to my practice and struggling with finding "stillness."
Why do you teach?
I believe the relationship between student & teacher is extremely important to the learning process, in any endeavor. I want to guide others to discover the tools that will help them the same way that my teachers have done for their students. Through these relationships we create the thread that goes back through history, and further into the future. We walk the path that others have walked before us with more bravery in our hearts, for we are not alone.
